The City of New York began with the first Dutch settlers in 1624. They bought Manhattan Island from the Native Americans in 1626, then they developed a citadel called New Amsterdam on the southern tip of the island. The English took over the city in 1664 and renamed New York. It became the first national capital of United States in the late 18th century. Later, it became the most populous city in the U.S. The 1825 completion of the Erie Canal through central New York connected the NYC port to the agricultural markets and commodities of the North American interior via the Hudson River and the Great Lakes.
